UK accountants can now ask Claude what's on their plate today

Sodium has connected its practice management platform to Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Firms ask questions in plain English and get answers back from their own live practice data.

London, UK – 5 August 2026 – Accountancy firms using Sodium Practice Management can now point Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini straight at their own practice data and ask it questions the way they’d ask a colleague.

“Which proposals I sent last month are still sitting unsigned?” gets an answer drawn from the firm’s live records, not a generic one. So does “what’s on my plate today?”, “what’s overdue for Smith & Co?” and “brief me on ACME before my call – contacts, services, statutory dates, anything overdue.” The assistant goes and looks, then answers.

Setting it up takes about two minutes and there is nothing to install. Firms sign in with their normal Sodium login, and that’s it.

Sodium believes it is the first UK practice management platform to offer an AI connector of this kind.

The gap it closes

Accountants have not been waiting for permission to use AI. AI in accounting 2026, AccountingWEB’s research with Sage Accountants covering more than 600 members in practice and business, found that seven in ten already use tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot – most commonly to research tax rules.

What those tools could not do was see the firm’s own data. The same research found that the single biggest priority for AI is the “natural integration of AI into existing software”, named by nearly four in ten respondents – ahead of support and training. Nearly a fifth said AI had delivered them no benefit at all.

“Seven in ten firms are already using this stuff, and it’s been working with one hand tied behind its back,” said Duane Jackson, co-founder of Sodium. “It could write you an email about a client. It couldn’t tell you which of your clients hadn’t signed their engagement letter. That’s the bit that was missing, and that’s the gap we’ve just closed.”

Answers, and actions

The questions a firm can ask span most of what sits in a practice system: clients and contacts, tasks and deadlines, proposals and engagement letters, services and pricing, time tracking, document requests, workflows, Companies House records, AML status and billing.

It isn’t only questions. The assistant can create a client, log time, raise a task, draft a document request or start a proposal – so a partner can say “create a new prospect called Greggs Carpentry, sole trader, Jane as manager” and have it done.

“Whatever the Sodium app can do, your AI can also do, because it runs on the same API we give our customers and partners,” said Jackson. “We didn’t build a separate AI layer with its own idea of the truth. There’s one API, one client record, and now the big AI assistants can talk to it.”

The connector is built on the Model Context Protocol, the open standard for connecting AI assistants to other systems, and works with Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.

Built around the objection

Security is the obstacle the sector expects most from AI. Six in ten named it in the AccountingWEB research, more than double the number worried about unclear returns, and among those not using AI tools at all, almost half cite security and privacy.

The connector is built around that. Every request runs as the person who signed in, against practices they are actually a member of, with their own permissions applied and membership checked on every call. Delete and bulk operations are not exposed to AI at all – not as an option, and not behind a setting.

“There are no shared API keys floating around and nothing to paste into an AI vendor’s settings,” said Jackson. “You sign in as you, the AI sees exactly what you’d see, and you can revoke it from your assistant’s settings the moment you want to. The AI can create and update. It cannot delete anything, full stop. That’s a design decision, not a setting we’ve defaulted to off.”

Independent reaction

Billie Mcloughlin of FridAI, who is independent of Sodium, wrote about the release on LinkedIn:

“You can now add the Sodium connector directly inside your AI app in about two minutes, super easy, no fiddly bits. And then you can just ask Claude things like ‘which of my proposals sent in the last month are still unsigned’ or ‘what’s on my plate today’ and Claude goes and looks in your practice management system to find out. This is what the ‘agentic era’ everyone keeps banging on about actually looks like in practice. It’s not sci-fi, it doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s your practice data and your AI assistant, connected… In two minutes.”

She added:

“Every practice management vendor is going to have to jump on this. Sodium got there very, very quickly, which is great. If you’re not a Sodium user, maybe it’s time to go and have a chat with your current practice management software: can I connect this to Claude? If not, why not – and if it’s not coming soon, then maybe it’s time to start looking at alternatives like Sodium that are a bit more forward thinking.”

It demonstrates the connector on real practice data rather than a sanitised demo, covering three things firms actually do with it: a Monday morning triage across the whole practice, working out what’s slipping and who needs chasing that day; prepping for a client call with one question instead of five screens; and turning a page of messy call notes into a tidy client record with the right fields set automatically – genuinely doing the admin, not just summarising it.

The session assumes no technical knowledge and is aimed at partners, practice owners and client managers, including those still weighing up whether AI is worth the effort. There is time for questions at the end.

“Bring the sceptical questions,” said Jackson. “Those are the useful ones.”
